One of the first assignments I had when I joined The Wichitan was to go and shoot basketball. The last basketball game I had gone to was for high school filming for Time Warner Cable. I thought “how hard could this be”?
Shooting video and shooting photos are just a bit different. Very quickly I discovered that sometimes you miss the shot. Or, there isn’t a good action photo that shows the face of the player. You need to really focus and pay attention to the game. There is so much room for error.
At this point I’m much better than when I started. Some games it seems that I’ll have thirty great photos! Others, I’m lucky if I can come back with two. I still have a way to go and the best part is that the more I go to games and practices the better my photos are.
